My family and I have been going to The Ambry for years, consistently leaving very satisfied. They have the best soups than any place in town, the food is as authentic as it gets, huge portions always cooked perfect and the service is very attentive & friendly. The atmosphere is very cozy for a date night and also family friendly and even great for parties.

Best German restaurant since I moved out of NYC in 1978. Food was hat, freshly cooked and very reasonable prices. Was there earlier this evening with my son before he had to leave to go back home in NYC. Their four course early food was reasonably priced; $19.95 for salad, french onion soup, Wiener Schnitzel with Lingonberries and Spaetzle. There was a choice of three different desserts but did not order any - we were too full, The next time I go back I will order from the regular menu. The service was well above average and not intrusive. While this is a tourist area and I live here full time, I was impressed with the staff and their knowledge of any item I asked about. Did not feel rushed.Hope to be ale to go back soon.

A great old staple. We ate lunch at the bar. I ordered the wiener schnitzel with the mixed rice which was yellow and brown rice which was very good. $ 10.95 The schnitzel was very large piece great flavor it was really good. The other dish was the special from chalkboard outside. It was two meatloaf patties $11.95 that also came with one side. All was very good . The place has a small bar , & it has small rooms , around, charming . Very quaint. In the evening there is a salad bar .

What a great place! I haven't had dinner here yet, but I will be coming back soon. I was next door having dinner and I saw this German place right next to it that seemed closed. To my surprise when I tried opening the door, the establishment was still in business. This place has an amazing bartender (Anita) with an awesome beer selection and a full bar. The atmosphere of the place is very cozy; you really fell like you are in a hometown bar/restaurant. I will be updating this post after I have dinner sometime in the next couple of weeks. So far a recommend this place with my eyes closed. :)

Great food. Good beer. Friendly service. I had the jaeger schnitzel with red cabbage and spaetzle. My husband had the prime rib. We will definitely be back soon.

****PEOPLE -- IF YOU POST A PICTURE, PLEASE NAME IT**** A family owned restaurant since 1981. Looking at this place from the outside, one would not realize how cool it is inside. Several different rooms with a lot of wall decorations. Made reservation for four for dinner on a Saturday evening. I checked out all the listed pictures, looked up what the different names meant and even looked up some recipes for the dishes. Very nice people took excellent care of us always making sure we were OK and keeping water glasses full. All main dishes come with salad bar. French onion soup $6.50 was very good. Schweinshaxe (a LARGE, roasted ham hock still on the bone) with one side $28.00. This could feed two easily with a couple of extra sides. This was not on the menu and I asked if it was available and they had one left. If this is what you want, call two days ahead and they will make sure they have one, or more, for you. As soon as I saw it I fell in love. Crispy skin still on the outside. I can make a meal of that stuff. A little hot sauce and I am good. The inside? Great roasted, fall off the bone pork. Schwewiebraten (Roast pork with dumpling and red cabbage $17.95. Very good. Bayrische (bratwurst, knockwurst and roast pork on a bed of sauerkraut and homefried potatoes) $17.95. Very good. Calves liver "Nicole" ( small slices of liver served with a cream sauce flavored with mushrooms, onions and a touch of cognac with rice) $16.95. Very good. My wife said it was the best she has had. Black forest tart with raspberrys $5.50 Warm apple strudel with vanilla ice cream (big) $8.50 Light beer $5.50 Iced tea $2.00 Everything was first class all the way. We will be back!!

Yet another review where the food is a 5, and the location is a 4. A solid 4, but a 4 none the less. I really like The Ambry. It's located in one of the many strip mall type buildings that run on the left and right sides of commercial as you get closer to the beach. I wish I could say I had visited all the small restaurants along these strips, but I have not had the privilege of checking out most of the Chinese, chicken wing and seafood joints that are hidden here. But I happen to wander into The Ambry after walking out of my dentist(which is next door), and was surprised to find the best Knockwurst, potato salad, and not to mention schnitzel in Broward. I have been a number of times and count it the best of the bunch in the area.(2nd best, Cypress Nook) Incredible soups, and the salad bar is great. I saw a vegetarian review that said there wasn't many options but I would argue that point. The negative that keeps the The Ambry from getting above 4.5 total from the average of reviews is the feeling your in a cellar. It can add to a homey effect though that some appreciate. Lastly, before you leave with your leftovers or take out, stop at the bar for one. It is tucked away to the right as you walk in, and as friendly as it gets. Bonus, if you get a drink, they set out crackers and spreads as opposed to just popcorn or something. Yes, this is the place to track down

What a gem! Run, don't walk! On a whim we decided to stumble into this little unassuming restaurant on Commercial after a brief check on yelp (while in the parking lot). Armed with empty bellies and our 3 month old, we entered what felt like a down home restaurant straight out of Germany, or for you native Floridians, a restaurant straight out of Epcot! The restaurant is quite large inside, with tables split amongst several cozy and intimate rooms. Cavernous and dark, the restaurant eludes a certain comfort that can best be felt on one of those rare chilly South Florida nights. Lucky for us, it was a bit chilly so a hearty dinner was what we were craving. We ordered the paprika schnitzel and a sausage platter. Both came with their salad bar option so we filled up our plates with their small salad bar selection to munch on before the main event. The salads are not necessary a the main portions are humongous! The schnitzel was absolutely delicious. Crispy breading and tasty sauce made this dish a star. It was accompanied by some German noodles that were very tasty when mixed with the paprika sauce. The sausages were also quite superb as well. They were accompanied by cabbage and German mustard which made for an authentic German experience. I can't forget to mention the giant beers we ordered at $5.50 each, they were a bargain! In hindisght, bringing the baby probably wasn't the best idea, but from the curb it seemed like such a casual quick place. In reality was a bit nicer than "bring your baby"! We can't wait to bring out of town friends back to the Ambry to show them a bit of German kitsch in Fort Lauderdale!

My wife and I have been many times at The Ambry and we were always satisfied with the food and service until last Friday, when my wife ordered a Zueri Geschnetzeltes which is a veal dish in a creme gravy/sauce. But this time, instead of serving veal, they served it with chicken. My wife complained to the waitress that the meat was not veal. We asked for the chef and instead the hostess stopped by our table and assured us that it was veal. The gentleman next to us ordered a Jaeger Schnitzel and he complained to the waitress as well that it was chicken instead of veal. I have been eating veal for a long time to understand the difference between veal and chicken. It is sad to see that a restaurant is charging it's customers for a veal dish and serving chicken. Very dissapointing. Will have to go to Old Heidelberg in the future!

Went here during Memorial Day weekend w my boyfriend and loved everything about this place. The German decor is spot on... And the food is authentic! I had steak with cheese spaetzle and it was perfect. The boyfriend had "pork wings" which was a special, which I snuck into and they were delicious. Portions are big, so come hungry. Met the owner too, which is always nice to see in a restaurant. Very nice guy, staff was very attentive also.

As so often happens, this review site is a duplicate. The duplicate Yelp site is listed under Muellers-Gerd-Ambry Restaurant. So, check under that name for more reviews. I've been going here for a long time and confess my surprise at seeing the Yelp reviews under "Muellers Gerd Ambry Restaurant" instead of just under "Ambry," as it is commonly known, and as is stated on their menu. But be that as it may, Ambry is the long time local area icon of German Food, long predating the recent new comers such what was Fritz and Franz Beirhaus (now kaput) or Checkers Old Munchen. Ambry is the smaller more rustic looking of the three, with old wooden chairs, table and a dinning area, sort of split up into comfy alcoves offering pleasant intimacy and an opportunity for good conversation. Their food and their service is also excellent with my favorite foods being their Zuricher Geschentzeltes (veal smothered with a creamy mushroom sauce) and their Sauerbraten. The Zuricher which is a veal/mushroom cream dish delightfully enhanced with a wine or cognac finish. As for any liver dish, Ambry does it the best of any, and to my knowledge the only one to have offerings like Norwegian Salmon (my like probably because I'm actually a Swede) and creamed herring (darn Germans always cream their herring instead of doing a dill pickling....another one my Swedish peccadilloes) for appetizers. They also have a very nice bar, most popular in early evening as well as into the very late evening hours. It gets crowded and the crowd is generally both friendly and fun. There is also a small outside sort of open air but semi enclosed area for conversation and smoking, where I can often be found wondering out to enjoy my drink away from the bustle of things.

OK Its authentic, its German and for that I should give it 5 stars. I am German myself and have gone a few times with friends and family and everything people believe about German food is true when you arrive here for dinner. Why do I only give it 3 stars? Well I do not eat meat so there is slim pickings here for me. When I go home to Germany many places have gotten with the program and offer some fresher and lighter fare along the old favorites to please a broader more health conscious audience. Also, its very dark and cave like at this place.... OK, maybe if you live in Florida 100% you do not crave outdoor spaces and sun shine the way I do...I usually visit from New York and can not wait to be outdoors... It's one of the main reasons I do not enjoy going to the Ambry. However the service is great, and for those wishing to fill up on Knodel, Kraut and Pork its the way to go.

I frequent The Ambry on a reg basis and I am never disappointed. Anita the bartender is always warm and inviting, always full of laughs (as if anyone else is funnier than me;) The PRIME RIB is to die for, delicious and done to perfection. Starting with the salad bar with FRESH bacon bits to top it off, the French onion soup is amazing. The staff treats you like family and remembers your name as you become a regular client. I never have room for dessert although I should at some point. VERY good beer selection since my significant other likes to partake in a Hofbrau on occasion. Like I said.. the prime rib, even adding a lobster tail to the entree' is ALWAYS A WINNER!

The amount of food here ought to be illegal. I mean, there is SO MUCH OF IT. And we didn't even have starters, just the salad bar. My dad ordered the Sauerbraten, which arrived with a good sized pile of spaetzle and another of red cabbage. My dad's friend had the Schweinshaxe and it was massive. She took more than 3/4ths of it home and it's going to be a soup this weekend. Silly me, I thought that the Zürcher Geschnetzeltes would be something a bit closer to normal sized. What a mistake! Pieces of veal in a white wine and mushroom sauce with a gigantic pile of spaetzle that also went home. And somehow we still decided to punish ourselves with dessert. A single piece of apple streudel, which arrived topped with whipped cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a tub of vanilla sauce to pour over it. What were we thinking?? Service was excellent. Bridget knew how to take care of us and when we mentioned that we wanted the special Schweinshaxe but we were going to have the salad bar slowly first, she went back to the kitchen to make sure that one was saved for us. Fortunate, because we got the last one. Woot woot! Great selection of German beers on draft and German wines too. No complaints at all. Great food, great service, a fab meal. Note: The back room must be some sort of bunker - I couldn't even get one bar on my cell phone.

They Tucker and Hofbrau original on draught amongst many others. I ordered some French onion soup to start. All the meals come with a salad bar. Make sure you try the German potato salad and blue cheese dressing. The sausage platter is outstanding.

Very authentically delicious German cuisine. I especially like the sauerbraten, so tender that you don't even need a knife. I had the salad bar, the liver dumpling soup, the sauerbraten with spaetzle and sauerkraut, followed by the pumpkin/apple strüdel. Everything was great. I loved the German décor and the waitstaff was friendly, prompt and attentive. I've tried the sauerbraten at Old Heidelberg, Cypress Nook and here; this is the best, with Cypress Nook a close second and Old Heidelberg a very distant third.

Great place for early bird 5-6pm. Includes soup, salad bar, entree, side, coffee and dessert for under $20. The prime rib was seasoned well with great flavor. Skillet cooked potatoes with bacon and rosemary. Cauliflower creamed soup was a little salty but good flavor. Salad bar has ice berg lettuce...would prefer romain or spinach.

Great food and beer, servings are big and plenty. Went there with my wife she had shrimp scampi which was delicious and I had a jäger schnitzel which was great, also the torte dessert was yummy. I would definitely go there again.

Went here for dinner with my son, 2 grandsons (9 months and 7 years) and my husband for a birthday celebration. The staff is OUTSTANDING! Dinner was very tasty as well. We each had a different dish and everyone enjoyed their food. The desert (apples, ice cream and pancake batter) was AMAZING! I can't remember the names of the dishes we chose, but I can assure you everything was fantastic. We have had good German food in our hometown (Columbus, Ohio) so we definitely were anxious to find a yummy place for German food. The salad bar was included with every entree. I had mentioned to the staff that it was my husband's birthday and they surprised him (and me) with a piece of chocolate cake, they couldn't have chosen better if they had asked! They were VERY attentive and our glasses were never empty. It was a little more expensive than I had anticipated, but the quality of the food, the amount of food and the service definitely made it worth while. We definitely will go again!

This has to be one of the worst German Restaurants I have ever experienced. The staff are rude, almost mean and impatient. My father who is a high Profile executive who has spent thousands of dollars over the years was Treated like a second class citizen. do not waste your money and avoid The embarrassment. You will be treated better at IHOP with much tastier Food. The food tastes cold and prepared and the beverages flat and Tasteless. The owners should be ashamed of themselves and do not Deserve the business....an angry customer........I would go to Fritz and Franz Bierhaus.

I just got back from staying at the Lago Mar resort in Ft. Lauderdale. The front desk employee, Eric, was German so I asked him where the best German restaurant in the city was located. He recommended The Ambry, so my husband and I went there with the kids. We both had the Wiener Schnitzel and homemade spaetzle. It was delicious. The kids shared an order of ribs and they loved it. I also ordered some potato pancakes for the kids but they didn't like them. Nice selection of German beer and many different wines to choose from. Overall, very authentic German decor and food. The waitress was attentive and it didn't matter if the kids were a little loud. We couldn't believe that there was another German restaurant across the street from this place. It was called 'Fritz & Franz'. I think I'll try that one next time I'm in Ft. Lauderdale.

Like most of the other Yelpers before, this place was exactly what they have all said. With that , I tried it last night and was not disappointed . We started with Potato Pancakes, then the salad bar ( small but just enough) then Beef Rouladen and Champignon Rahim Schnitzel. We did not have dessert because we were stuffed. Everything was great, nice little rooms so you could be semi private. I did see one small room with a table for 6 or 8 when you first walk in. We will definitely be going back.

I would not recommend anyone whos ever had real German food to come here with high expectations. I am German and the food did not impress me at all. The Rotkraut and Kroketten I couldnt even eat. The salad bar is ok. The place is very dark with no windows. I give 2 stars only because our waitress was extremely nice, the service she provided was truely outstanding. However, the other lady who was serving tables (elderly, blonde, possibly the owner?) was very rude to us to the point where I wanted to get up and leave. I will not be going back, the food at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus across the street is much better and less pricey.

I have been wanting to try dinner here for a while since I have heard so many people rave about the food, unfortunately I have only stopped in for late night drinks and I have to say this place has the best Irish Coffee drinks ever and a very friendly bar! Wonderful beer selection as well, hopefully I can update this review soon with dinner.

The food is barely okay and the salad bar is iffy. The service is okay, but for the price, this is a painfully bad value. Very inferior to Checkers Old Munchen and Old Heidelberg. I have no reason to ever go back, and the person who recommended this place to me doesn't have taste buds.

If this place was any more German you'd need a passport. I always feel like I've crossed some international border when I walk through the front door. They've really gone over the top trying to make this place feel like a little piece of Germany with the fireplaces and antiques, wood trim everywhere, music, dishes, food, beer and even accents of the wait staff. I absolutely love their Goulash Soup. It's practically a meal by itself. I love everything on the menu. Well except the salad bar. It looks clean and fresh but some of the items are not things I care to eat. This is a great place for small gatherings over very tasty meat and potato style food and a warm, friendly environment. Very different from the average commercial establishment.

So it's been years since we've been to The Ambry. Friends suggested somewhere new so this was everyone's choice. We were greeted at the door by the hostess and seated right away. The restaurant is made up of several small dining rooms with 3-4 tables each, ours very private and intimate. Our server brought over menus and took drink orders. To my surprise, a full bar. We gave our orders and looked over the menu. We gravitated to one of our favorite German dishes, Jaeger Schnitzel which came with homemade Spatzle and the salad bar. Our server was pleasant and used some common German words throughout the evening which made our visit more authentic. She kept our drinks full and checked in often to see if we needed anything. Dinner was served and was piping hot. Our Schnitzel was topped with a rich mushroom gravy and truly made the dish. The Spatzle was fabulous and the perfect accompaniment to our dish. We had a terrific meal and dining experience coming back to The Ambry and we will make this one of our "go to" restaurants.

We haven't had dinner here since 3/12 with Bruce! I needed a Sauebratten....as usual it was excellent with spaetzel. Included in the $16.95 EARLY BIRD is the salad bar, soup desert and coffee. P had Rainbow trout which she enjoyed (half came home) Tucher Weiss beer on tap and a descent house red wine, we left happy.

Our meal here was neither horrible, nor was it anything to write home about. The service was very good after a slight hiccup at the beginning with another, less experienced server. I really liked the 80's-style décor, lighting and of course the throwback salad bar. At least the women on the staff aren't forced to wear Dirndl.* I'm not entirely sure who the regulars are at the Ambry. They have a full bar, so that business might be keeping them afloat. Looking at the menu, the choices feel very much like what you might have found in Southern Germany in the 1970's. For most Americans, maybe even the whole notion of going to a German restaurant is rather dated, so the menu could be playing to their expectations. While I haven't been all that impressed by the food on my two visits here. Although it is a lot better than the immediate local competition, the food leaves something to be desired. That said, I think this place could be an absolute riot for a group of friends looking for something a bit different. *Dirndl has an interesting origin. It comes from the word "Dirne", which means 'tart' or 'doxy'.

We have been here 3 times. The food is very good. authentic German cuisine. The also have a very nice selection on their menu. The only downside is they serve canned soda but do not tell you & they charge for every refill.

When I step inside, I feel like I'm in Germany. The food is excellent, and the ambiance is quaint. They have a salad bar, which contains lots of fresh ingredients. On the salad bar, among other things, they have the most delicious Red cabbage/coleslaw/sauerkraut-I'm not sure what it's actually called-I just know it's delicious. I usually get the sauerbraten when I'm there. It is hands down my favorite. I've also had the bratwurst, and that is also excellent. If you haven't visited yet, I highly recommend that you do.

Well, I love German food, and this place did not disappoint. On top of that, service was excellent, portions were good-sized, and prices were very reasonable. The only definite negative was that it was freezing inside! They should definitely push the thermostat up a bit. But regarding food, service and value for the money I loved it.

cant get enough of this place. went here a few times on my last visit and had the lamb chops 2 nights and prime rib on the other and both were great. all meals were early bird specials and came with soup, salad bar and a dessert for about $20 bucks great deal. the hofbrau beer on tap was really good and anita, gabby and hans were as friendly as ever. this place is one of those real friendly places where you go in alone and say goodbye to 10 people when you leave just super welcoming.just a remainder to people reading reviews when most reviews are positive and 1 or 2 just so bad and mean spirited that mention other restaurants should be viewed as suspicious at least.also i overheard someone complaining about having to put 50 cents in the meter to park. half of lot is free remember the city runs these lots not the restaurants judge them from the time you walk in the door and really its only 50 cents well worth it to dine here. thanks again gabby anita and hans hope to see you guys again soon.

Just recently foudn this place, its nice! lots of german drinks, and german food :) every wedn is free food, i ate all I could when I went last time haha. for a German, it almost feels home :) the prices aren't too bad, but it felt little heavy (3 beers, 2 shots, 2 cokes = 32 bux)

This is my favorite of the German restaurants I've visited in Fort Lauderdale. Very Bavarian decor and everything I or my companions have tried has been delicious. I love the salad bar, which has lots meat salads in addition to typical salad bar items. My favorite, though, is their sauerbraten, which is so tender it doesn't require a knife. The bar is cozy too, if you just want to stop by for a beer.

You know you are in for something special the moment you walk through the door of The Ambry. The brick walls, wood furnishings and antique decor, a cozy dining room to your left and to your right a tiny, bustling, authentic pub full of cheerful patrons. The homey comfort of the place just seems to draw you in. Some of the small dining rooms offer privacy and in others, fireplaces just add to the pleasant ambiance. Enjoy a cold German beer while you leaf through the extensive menu, they've got all of the good ones here; Warsteiner, Paulaner, Tucher, Spaten, Kostrizer and my favorite (which is kind of rare in the U.S.) Schnieder-Wiess. If you enjoy wheat beers like Tucher or Blue Moon, treat yourself to a Schnieder-Wiess...I never knew a beer could be so good! For starters it's hard to go wrong with the soothing fresh Baked Brie with Lingonberries (8.95) however if you're feeling adventurous the Beef Tartar (12.95) is extraordinary and with the strong flavors of mustard, capers, and red onions it goes very well with that cold beer! Also highly recommended are the Goulash soup (a little spicy with a good kick of Paprika) and the Pate (not on the menu but sometimes available by request). The Dinner menu is full of familiar traditional German entrees like Weiner Schnitzel (18.95), Jaeger Schnitzel (18.95), and Sauerbraten (16.95) as well as some not so familiar but delicious dishes. The Calves Liver "Berlin" (16.95) with apples and bacon browned onions is by far the best calves liver dish I have ever delighted in tasting and Zuricher Geschnetzeltes (17.95) features melt in your mouth tender Veal chunks in a decadent mushroom cream sauce with wine and cognac. But, if you just want to be blown away then the Schwabentopf (26.95), large medallions of filet mignon served over delectable cheese spaezle topped with a cream sauce full of chunky mushrooms, is simply over the top delicious. Executive chef Hans Jr. obviously loves what he is doing. He puts his heart and soul into every preparation and from the simplest schnitzel to the carefully butterflied and perfectly cooked Rainbow Trout; it shows in the food and in the flavor. When you go be sure to stop and say hello to Anita the barkeeper, she will make you feel welcome and will even set a special place for you if you care to dine at the bar. It took my good friend Robert raving about the joint to finally get me in the door of The Ambry and obviously I'm real glad he did. My wife and I have since been back time and again not only to enjoy the food and the atmosphere but to introduce other friends to this awesome little slice of Germany in our own back yard. A restaurant has to be something special to last more than 25 years in this town and The Ambry is definitely something special.

I like this place better than the Old Heidelberg on SR84. I had the schweinebraten (pork roast) for dinner which I inhaled. The place is tiny so you might have a short wait at the bar before a table clears, but go ahead and have a Koestrizer draft. The brown bread at the salad bar is great, but leave room for everything else and dessert. The place is family run and the kitchen and service are very good.
